Web Hosting Types

There are large companies that are not internet service providers, but they too probably need to have a computer that is constantly connected to the internet so they can send files, emails and other things to other contacts, sites, etc. They might use their computer as a host for a website to offer details of the goods and services they offer to anyone who might be interested. For this type of company, there are some options:

  • Free web hosting service: A free web hosting service is offered by companies that have a limited amount of services. These might be free due to advertisements and when compared to paid web hosting, are pretty limited.

  • Shared web hosting service: This is a way of web hosting that places one company's website on the same server as other sites. In this case, there may be a few hundred, or there can be thousands of sites on that server. In this case, all of the domains will share the pool of server's resources, so the CPU and the RAM your site will be allowed will have a limitation. Keep in mind that the features you can get choosing this web hosting service are pretty extensive.

  • Reseller web hosting: This technique lets the client be their own web host. Resellers have the potential to function for an individual domain under any combination of the listed type of hosting. Of course, this will depend on who they use as a reseller. A reseller account might vary from very large to very small and they often have their own server dedicated to a co-located one.

  • Dedicated hosting service: This is a technique where the user has his or her own server and has complete control over the server with root access for Linux and administrator access through Windows. Keep in mind that in this situation the user doesn't usually own the server. There is another hosting type of dedicated server called self-managed (unmanaged). Of the dedicated plans, this is often the least expensive option. This allows the user complete administrative access their dedicated box, which makes the client responsible for securing and maintaining their server.

  • Virtual Dedicated Server: This is also called a VPS, or virtual private server. It divides the resources of a server into "virtual servers" where the resources can then be divided in ways that won't affect the hardware. VPS will usually be given resources depending on a one server to many virtual private servers relationship, but this process might me done for many different including the ease of moving VPS containers between different servers. Users usually have access to their own space on the server.

  • Colocation web hosting service: This type of web hosting has similarities to a dedicated web hosting service, but the user has ownership of the "colo" server while the hosting company offers the physical space and maintenance to the server itself. This is a very powerful and very expensive type of web hosting. Most of the time, the colocation provider gives little or no support to their client's machine; instead they only offer internet access, electrical and server storage space.

  • Managed hosting service: In this type of web hosting, users own the web server, but they do not have absolute control over it. They are free to administer their files using remote management software like FTP. The user is not given full control to guarantee quality of service and not giving the user the ability to make changes to the server and cause problems with configuration. Clients lease, rather than own the server.

  • Cloud Hosting: This is a relatively new kind of hosting platform which gives clients reliable, scalable and powerful hosting that is based off of load balanced clustered servers and the billing of the utilities. By taking away the single point of failures, this method allows clients to purchase only for what they use as opposed to what they have the potential to use.

  • Clustered hosting: This type of web hosting has multiple servers that host the same content to better use the resources. Clustered servers tend to be the ideal solution for the high-availability of dedicated hosting or to create a web hosting solution that is scalable. A cluster has the potential to separate the database hosting capability from web serving.

  • Grid hosting: This is a type of distributed hosting that occurs when a cluster of servers acts as a grid and contains many nodes.

  • Home server: This is most often an individual machine that is in a private residence that is used for the hosting of one or more sites from a consumer type broadband connection. These are usually machines that are built for this purpose and are most of the time older PCs. Some ISPs will actually work to block home servers by not allowing incoming requests to TCP port 80 of the user connection, or by refusing to give static IP addresses. One common way to get a good DNS hostname is to create an account with a dynamic DNS service.
